The peculiarities of cybernetics. Many a book has borne the title “Theory of Machines”, but it usually contains information about mechanical things, about levers and cogs. Cybernetics, too, is a “theory of machines”, but it treats, not things but ways of behaving. Two of the best-known proposals are Beer’s Viable System Model and Steinbruner’s Cybernetic Theory of Decision. Both are homeostatic systems, inspired by living organisms.

This book serves the knowledge society to address the complexity of decision making and problem solving in the 21st century with contributions from systems and cybernetics. A multi-disciplinary approach has been adopted to support diversity and to develop inter- and trans-disciplinary knowledge within the shared thematic of problem solving and.

Because the cybernetic decision strategy appears to be the most appropriate to deal with the entry decision, the work goes deeper into this model focusing on the degree of uncertainty that the environment represents to the decision makers and to the state of the conflict of interest that arises because this decision implies a coordination problem.   In this post, we will hear from Paul Pangaro who presents a primer on systems theory and cybernetics. Paul’s specialty is cybernetics, an often-misunderstood discipline in which he has been enmeshed for his entire career, and where he has been lucky to know many of its great minds of the prior generation who were most active from the s through the s: Lettvin, Pask, Beer, von Foerster.
